Fabian Johnson to leave Hoffenheim

Hoffenheim have announced that U.S. international Fabian Johnson will leave the club on a free transfer in the summer.

Johnson joined Hoffenheim in 2011 and has made 70 league appearances for the club, but coach Markus Gisdol has now confirmed he will move on when his contract expires at the end of the season.

“We’ve fought for Fabian’s signature since the summer, but he has decided to leave us,” Gisdol told a news conference ahead of the trip to Freiburg.

The 26-year-old, who can play in defence or midfield, has been most strongly linked with Borussia Moenchengladbach as they seek to strengthen their left side, but Hertha Berlin are also reported to be interested.

Johnson, who has won 18 caps for the U.S. national team, is currently working on his comeback after breaking his hand in Hoffenheim’s 4-0 defeat at Nuernberg in January.
