Schweinsteiger back in Bayern training

Philipp Lahm says Bayern Munich wasted too many great chances despite beating Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0.

Bastian Schweinsteiger returned to first-team training with Bayern Munich on Wednesday after nearly three months since his last match, and completed the whole session.

Schweinsteiger, 29, needed further surgery to his ankle in early November, following a first surgery in June, directly after Bayern’s Treble-winning season. The Germany international has played a total of 16 competitive games for Bayern this season, but ongoing ankle problems made it difficult for Schweinsteiger to maintain his rhythm without pain.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has not featured for Bayern since November.
Injuries have restricted Schweinsteiger to only 16 competitive appearances this season.

The holding midfielder had already returned to Bayern training during the winter training camp in Qatar, but was then sidelined again with a knee injury.

On Wednesday, he completed a whole session, and scored two winners in a three-against-three tournament at the Saebener Strasse, the club website reported.

“We need Bastian as a personality,” Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer told Kicker. The ever-wary former Borussia Dortmund sweeper added that he feels opponents will try and battle Bayern with a more physical approach in the final stretch of the season.

“It will not be enough to only play football against aggressive teams,” Sammer said. “Look at how [Moritz] Leitner tread on our feet in the first five minutes during our visit to Stuttgart. We have to realise that when reading the game.”

“We know where this journey is headed, and we should not be provoked by it, and don’t be surprised by those little acts of spite,” Sammer added. “We have to be quicker, more intelligent and more awake.”

Bayern Munich have been fouled 237 times this season, with only Borussia Moenchengladbach being fouled less.
