Barcelona to continue Alba appeal

Barcelona are to continue their appeal against the one-game ban handed out to Jordi Alba after the competition committee upheld the referee’s ruling.

Jordi Alba is dismissed during Barcelona's defeat at home to Valencia.
Jordi Alba was shown two yellow cards during the defeat to Valencia.

Tomas: Barca unconvincing

Alba was shown a second yellow with 13 minutes remaining of the 3-2 home defeat to Valencia at the weekend, and Barca’s 10 men were unable to find a way back into the game.

The Catalan club had looked to have referee Pedro Jesus Perez Montero’s decision overturned, but competition committee stuck with the official’s decision and imposed the automatic one-match punishment.

Barca have since issued a statement saying they will continue to fight the case and present an appeal to the authorities on Friday morning, in the hope of freeing the player for the trip to Sevilla’s Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan.

“Once we were aware this Wednesday of the punishment of one game for Jordi Alba given by the competition committee, FC Barcelona decided to present an appeal to have the red card shown to the azulgrana full-back overturned,” the statement read. “It must be remembered that the blaugrana 18 was sent off against Valencia for two yellow cards. The appeals committee will meet on Friday morning.”

That meeting on Friday morning will also consider Real Madrid’s appeal against the three-game suspension received by Cristiano Ronaldo following his sending off during the 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao last weekend.
