Sources: U.S.-Nigeria before World Cup

CARSON, Calif. -- The Brazil-bound U.S. World Cup team plans to kick off its three-match, stateside send-off series at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, Calif., multiple sources told ESPN FC.

The U.S. will begin its pre-World Cup tour at Stanford Stadium, which has hosted some recent San Jose Earthquakes games.

The opponent for the May 27 match has not yet been finalized, but U.S. Soccer has had discussions with Sweden, Serbia and Turkey, among others, the sources said.

The Americans will also base their pre-tournament training camp in Northern California before heading to Harrison, N.J., for the second match, possibly against one of those same European foes.

The final game of the tour will take place in Florida against reigning African champ Nigeria, multiple sources said, with Everbank Field in Jacksonville emerging as the early favorite to host that match.

Earlier this week, SI.com reported that the series finale would be held on June 7, with the U.S. scheduled to travel to its World Cup base in Sao Paulo the next day.

"We're still in discussions with venues and opponents, and at this time none of our send-off matches have been finalized," U.S. Soccer spokesman Neil Buethe told ESPNFC.com on Saturday. "We hope to have an announcement in the near future."

The United States, which is also expected to host an exhibition against CONCACAF rival Mexico in April, opens its Brazil 2014 slate June 16 against Ghana in Natal. It will play Portugal in Manaus six days later, and close out the group stage against Germany on June 26 in Recife.
