Sherwood expects Spurs to respond

Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood has urged his team "not to panic" as they attempt to bounce back from their 5-1 defeat against Manchester City against Hull on Saturday.

• Crace: Spurs must move on from City mauling

Spurs suffered their second heavy defeat of the season against City at White Hart Lane on Wednesday, but Sherwood said his players should put the result in perspective on the result as they resume their push for a top-four finish.

“People can panic after a big defeat, but you have to look at the team we were playing against,” he explained.

“City have done it to a lot of other teams, put five and six past a lot of teams. That one is gone now. It is only three points, three points we would rather have had, but we haven’t got them and we have to move on to Hull now.

“It was a difficult task the other evening. The boys were very down on Thursday, as you would expect, but hopefully we are over that now and we are going into a game at Hull. These are the games you need to be winning if you are going to get into the top four.

“Good teams bounce back straight away. If you dwell on it too long, you lose a couple more games and you are out of the picture. I think we have the squad to do that.

“There were mitigating circumstances. It was Man City and we need to look at that and realise we won’t get hammered in every game. We have to go to Hull and believe we are good enough to win."

Sherwood went on to praise former Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone, who has enjoyed an impressive first season under Steve Bruce’s guidance at Hull since moving from White Hart Lane last summer.

“I think he has been fantastic and it was obviously a massive coup for a club like Hull, with all due respect, to get a player of that quality,” he said of Huddlestone. “Brucey appreciates the qualities he has brought to the side, and I’m just hoping he has a shocker on Saturday.

“We had just brought in a lot of players and sometime players stay at a club too long and go stale. It looks like he has a new lease of life at Hull. He had a lot of injury problems at Tottenham, and the club made a choice to move on.

“I’m sure Tom Huddlestone will be getting his right foot wand ready to spray passes around. We have to stop that. This will be a tough game.

“Being a football manager is tough. Being a player is tough, but it’s nothing like being in the hot-seat. Steve Bruce will see the pressures.

"His job was to remain in the league, and he has made a good fist of it up to now. They have had a bit of a dip, and hopefully they are still in a dip on Saturday.”

Jan Vertonghen, Younes Kaboul and Paulinho are all available for Spurs again after lengthy absences, with Sherwood saying their return "feels like I have new signings."
