Bridcutt, 26, has signed a three and a half-year deal on Wearside after the two clubs agreed a fee understood to be in the region of 2.5 million pounds.

He joined Brighton from Chelsea, having failed to make a first team appearance for the Blues, and became a key component of Gus Poyet's Seagulls side, making more than 100 appearances.

Speaking to Sunderland's official website, he said: "It's a great feeling for me. Sunderland is a massive club. I've been given a great opportunity here, and I'm looking forward to what's in store for me.

"Gus has had a big impact on my career and, given another opportunity to play under him, I'm always going to take that opportunity. He's a great manager, a great man, and tactically he's up there with some of the best.

"Growing up as a kid you always want to play in the Premier League, and you're never going to turn it down. You always see big derbies coming up, and Sunderland versus Newcastle is always one of the ones you look forward to seeing. Now I've got an opportunity to be a part of it, and I'm looking forward to it."

Brighton manager Oscar Garcia wished Bridcutt good luck, telling the Sussex club's official website: "On behalf of the club, I would like thank Liam for his time and efforts at the Albion and we wish him well for the future."

Meanwhile, the Black Cats have agreed deals to send out defender Modibo Diakite, striker Duncan Whatmore, midfielder David Vaughan and winger David Moberg Karlsson.

Diakite, 26, was signed on a free transfer from Lazio in the summer and will return to Serie A after agreeing a move to Fiorentina until the end of the season. Whatmore will head to Hibernian for the rest of the campaign after making his Sunderland debut in January's FA Cup tie against Carlisle.

Wales midfielder Vaughan has completed a permanent move to Nottingham Forest after a successful loan spell, agreeing a contract with the Championship promotion hopefuls until the end of the season.

Kilmarnock have confirmed the loan signing of Karlsson, who joined Sunderland from IFK Goteborg in the summer.
