Rhys Williams is likely to miss this year’s World Cup after suffering an Achilles injury.

• Brewin: World Cup injuries

The 25-year was carried off on a stretcher in pain and taken to hospital after twisting his body sharply just before the break in Boro's goalless draw with Wigan at the Riverside.

Williams, who started in new Australian manager Ange Postecoglou’s first squad against Costa Rica, was expected to be one of the country’s mainstays at the World Cup finals in Brazil after missing the 2010 World Cup with a serious pelvic injury..

But Australian fans’ fears were realised when Middlesbrough took to social media to announce the extent of Williams’ injury.

"[Middlesbrough coach] Aitor Karanka has confirmed that Rhys Williams is likely to miss the rest of the season with his Achilles injury,” the club tweeted.

The Socceroos have already suffered one major blow in the lead-up to the World Cup with striker Robbie Kruse expected to miss the finals in Brazil after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.
