Newcastle complete De Jong loan move

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Netherlands striker Luuk de Jong on loan from Borussia Moenchengladbach until the end of the season.

De Jong, 23 -- who could sign a permanent deal with the Magpies in the summer -- may make his debut in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on Saturday.

He had been strongly linked with a move to Newcastle after failing to settle in the Bundesliga, where he scored only six goals after a far more prolific career at FC Twente in his home country.

And he said he was delighted to have confirmed the transfer, telling the club’s official website: "Newcastle is a great club, and I have a good feeling about it.

"I am very impressed with the stadium and training ground, and have been made to feel very welcome by everyone I have met.

"It has been a tough season for me so far, but I am here to play games and want to be important for the team. I am really looking forward to playing for Newcastle."

Magpies director of football Joe Kinnear said De Jong “has an excellent pedigree and will add significantly to our striking options.”

"We've been watching him for a little while now, and I am sure he will prove to be a valuable acquisition for us. He's a great character and a proven goalscorer."
