Merseyside Police have launched an investigation after coins appeared to be thrown at Liverpool striker Luis Suarez during the 4-0 win over Everton at Anfield.

Suarez handed a coin to referee Martin Atkinson as he prepared to take a corner in front of Everton fans in the first half, and police believe other items were thrown in the Uruguayan’s direction during that time.

Merseyside Police issued a statement saying: "We can confirm we are investigating following reports of some missiles being thrown during the Liverpool vs. Everton football match this evening, Tuesday, Jan. 28.

"The incidents took place during the first half of the game when a number of coins and other small objects are believed to have been thrown from the stands onto the playing area.

"Officers are requesting CCTV from the stadium and will review any footage as part of inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents."

When asked whether Suarez had mentioned the missile after the match, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said: “He never mentioned nothing, no.”
