Pardew realistic on Cabaye situation

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has said he does not feel confident that the club can keep midfielder Yohan Cabaye past the January transfer window.

Ryder: Newcastle chasing double

Cabaye, 28, has been the subject of strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain this month, with the French champions keen to bring in a central midfielder following an injury to Adrien Rabiot.

The Magpies rejected PSG's first offer -- believed to be in the region of 14 million pounds – but Pardew has conceded that he is not sure whether he will be able to keep the France international at St James' Park.

“We know that we've got a club interested in Cabaye who are very wealthy and powerful. We're conscious of that, but we will be doing our best to protect Newcastle United,” Pardew told the Northern Echo

"Am I confident [of retaining Cabaye]? No. I don't think any team not in a Champions League position, or fighting for a Champions League position, would be different.

"We would need to bring someone in for sure [if Cabaye leaves]. But we're going to need some time to do that. We've informed the club that we are interested, and the agents that we are very conscious of that.”

Pardew said the Cabaye deal looks further along the line to completion than Andy Carroll's big-money transfer to Liverpool in 2011 had appeared to be.

“In many ways, the Andy Carroll one had less mileage than this one,” he said. “That came really out of the blue -- we never quite expected it. We never expected to see the back of him. This has got as much mileage, if not more, because of the size of the club and the finance that's behind it.”

He added: “We're hoping to sign a player outside the Cabaye situation for the second half of the season, and are getting closer to that.”
