'Utd to inform Rooney of transfer plans'

Manchester United are prepared to keep Wayne Rooney abreast of the club's transfer plans as they seek to convince the striker to stay, according to widespread reports.

Payne: Spending must go on
Brewin: What's next for United?

Sources from both the club and the player’s camp confirmed to ESPN FC at the weekend that Rooney has begun talks over a new contract, expected to be worth around 300,000 pounds a week, although there was some suggestion that the player may require some persuasion to extend his deal.

It is now claimed that the club are ready to give the 28-year-old information on the club’s intended targets as David Moyes looks to build on the signing of Juan Mata.

The Guardian wrote: “The England striker has been trusted with transfer-market information and kept in the loop about possible signings in a move that acknowledges his importance to the club and a recognition, at the highest level within Old Trafford, that a player of Rooney's stature deserves to know whether a team who have been struggling all season have the financial muscle and ambition to put it right.”

Sir Alex Ferguson had written in his recent autobiography that Rooney had pushed for the club to sign Germany international Mesut Ozil in 2010, but had been warned that transfer targets were “none of his business.”

The reports -- which also appeared in newspapers including The Times, Daily Mirror and The Sun -- also indicate that Moyes, who had previously worked with the striker at Everton, is ready to offer Rooney the captaincy.

Rooney’s current contract is due to expire in 2015 and he has been linked with a move to Chelsea, who had publicly courted the striker during the summer, but Blues boss Jose Mourinho recently said United would more likely sell to a “non-direct rival” outside the Premier League.
