Roma close gap, Milan comeback

Roma moved to within six points of Serie A leaders Juventus as they claimed a comfortable 3-1 victory over Hellas Verona at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.

Francesco Totti was on target from the penalty spot to put the result beyond doubt for Roma.
Roma's Francesco Totti netted a penalty in the win.

Goals from Adem Ljaljic, Gervinho and Francesco Totti handed the away side the points as Emil Hallfredsson's second-half equaliser proved not enough for Verona.

The Giallorossi recorded a 1-0 victory over Juve in the Coppa Italia in midweek and made it their fifth win in succession, condemning Verona to their third straight league defeat.

Substitute Giampaolo Pazzini left it late to score his first goal of the season and complete a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory for AC Milan at Cagliari.

The Italy striker only returned to the team in December following a long injury lay-off and, minutes after Mario Balotelli cancelled out Marco Sau's first-half opener with a free-kick, Pazzini was on hand to knock home from a corner.

It was a second straight league victory for Milan under new coach Clarence Seedorf and, although 14th-placed Cagliari may feel sick after surrendering all three points, the mainlanders can celebrate climbing two places to ninth.

The first hat-trick of Alberto Aquilani's career was not quite enough to edge Fiorentina past Genoa in a thrilling 3-3 encounter at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The attacking midfielder is not known for his goalscoring ability, but twice pegged Genoa back after Alberto Gilardino and Luca Antonini netted for the visitors.

Aquilani reached a personal milestone when giving fourth-placed Fiorentina the lead for the first time shortly after the break, but Sebastian De Maio scored midway through the second half to rescue a share of the points from a 3-3 draw.

Inter Milan endured another frustrating afternoon as basement boys Catania held them to a goalless draw at San Siro.

The Nerazzurri went into the contest looking for their first win in 2014 and had their chances but lacked a finishing touch. The closest Inter came to taking three points was seven minutes from time when Rolando's header was kept out by Catania goalkeeper Alberto Frison.

The result may have extended Inter's winless run to five games but the point has at least allowed the Nerazzurri to remain in fifth place, where they are one point clear of Torino, Parma and Hellas Verona.

A last-gasp goal from Alessandro Diamanti earned relegation-threatened Bologna a share of the points from a 1-1 draw with Sampdoria at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The Rossoblu remain winless under new coach Davide Ballardini, who replaced Stefano Pioli earlier this month, but the point earned in Genoa puts a chink of daylight between them and 18th-placed Sassuolo.

A solitary goal from Amauri earned red-hot Parma a narrow but deserved 1-0 win over struggling Udinese.

Amauri's header in the 35th minute handed the Crociati their fourth straight league win, lifting the club to seventh in the table, where they are just one point adrift of fifth-placed Inter Milan. However, Udinese's fourth consecutive loss has left the team in 15th and only three points clear of the drop zone.

Livorno ended a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Sassuolo to give Domenico Di Carlo a perfect start as coach of the Tuscan outfit.

Di Carlo replaced Attilio Perotti earlier this week and the change in command paid immediate dividends. Goals from Leandro Greco, Paulinho and Marco Benassi handed the Amaranto a 3-0 lead after 26 minutes played.

Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi reduced the deficit before the half-hour mark from the penalty spot but the hosts held on to claim their fourth win of the campaign.

Ciro Immobile missed a late penalty, but an earlier spot-kick from Alessio Cerci was enough to see Torino clinch a 1-0 victory over 10-man Atalanta.

The Granata climbed to sixth in the table with a fifth win from eight games thanks to Cerci, who won and converted a penalty on the hour mark at the Stadio Olimpico.
