Mariners take second spot in A-League

Brisbane Roar came back from a goal down to beat Wellington Phoenix 2-1 on Friday and remain top of the Australian A-League standings.

The Central Coast Mariners climbed to second place in the A-League standings with an impressive 3-0 win over the Newcastle Jets on Saturday in Gosford.

Three first-half goals -- from Daniel McBreen, Matt Simon and a sublime Anthony Caceres strike -- set up the victory for last season's title winners.

The result means Newcastle have not won in a league fixture in Gosford since January 12, 2008 -- losing six matches and drawing three in that period.

Also on Saturday, a stunning 90th-minute equaliser from Ryan Griffiths allowed Adelaide United to escape with a 2-2 draw against Melbourne Heart at Coopers Stadium, denying the bottom-placed visitors a rare away win.

Bruce Djite's 22nd-minute opener had given the Reds an early advantage, but Harry Kewell coolly levelled from the penalty spot in the 61st minute following an errant Nigel Boogaard tackle and Patrick Kisnorbo then edged Heart ahead 11 minutes from time, only for Griffiths' last-gasp effort to spare United's blushes.

Meanwhile, table-topping Brisbane Roar ended their two-game losing streak at home by beating Wellington Phoenix 2-1 on Friday night.

The Phoenix took the lead in the first-half through Belgium striker Stein Huysegems before two goals in the final 45 minutes -- a goal to debutant Devante Clut and a long range strike from Luke Brattan -- secured the win for the Roar.
