Player does a Cantona - 19 years on

Non-league Goole have told Karl Colley he will never play for them again after he was involved in an altercation with a visiting fan -- 19 years to the day since Eric Cantona's infamous assault on a supporter.

Eric Cantona's kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace fan is one of the most infamous incidents in English football history
Eric Cantona launched a kung-fu style kick at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons on Jan. 25, 1995.

Colley, listed as a 30-year-old defender on Goole's website, was sent off in their Evo-Stik South game with Coalville at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds. As he left the field, video footage showed Colley make three attempts to confront a dissenting fan, appearing to throw a punch at him on the second occasion.

The Football Association told Press Association Sport it would look into the incident on Monday, while Goole's response has already been made with Colley told he will not play for them again.

"Straight after the game he was sacked,'' Goole secretary Andrew Morris told Press Association Sport after a game which Coalville won 3-0.

"This is one individual. I spoke to Coalville after the game and they said also it was one individual,'' Morris added. "This is a shame because we're just a group of volunteers. It's disgusting and embarrassing.''

A statement on Goole's website backed up what Morris said, adding: "After the deplorable incident at today's home game against Coalville Town, we can confirm that the player responsible has been released by the club.

"We are a family club and incidents of this nature have no place in football and will not be tolerated at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds. The club acted quickly and decisively and released the player with immediate effect and as such the player in question will never play for our football club again.

"We apologise to each and every supporter at the game today and whilst as a club, we can't legislate for incidents of this nature, we will not tolerate them from anyone.'' The two sides are slated to face each other again at Coalville next weekend. Coalville, who are chasing promotion to the Evo-Stik Premier, which would put them two rungs below the Conference, said on Saturday night that they were not holding Goole responsible.

"It's nothing to do with Goole, I heard the two chairmen talking afterwards,'' secretary Robert Brooks told Press Association Sport. "There is no issue with the club.''

Goole's website lists Colley as having an extensive list of former clubs, with Newcastle named as his first. Records show he made a number of friendly appearances for the Magpies.

Coalville's Twitter feed reported that Colley was sent off for a foul on Cameron Stuart before heading into the main stand of Goole's ground. After three attempts at a square-up, he was led away by the club's kitman Graeme Smith and their assistant manager, the professional boxer and former Birmingham midfielder Curtis Woodhouse.

"Thought id seen it all, I now have football,'' Woodhouse, who serves under David Holdsworth, said on his Twitter account.

On January 25, 1995, Manchester United forward Cantona launched a kung-fu style kick at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons, after being dismissed in a Premiership match at Selhurst Park.
