Davis: Saints are together

Southampton club captain Kelvin Davis has insisted the unity of his club’s dressing room is as strong as ever, as he gave a broad hint that Saints' record signing Dani Osvaldo will not be welcome back into the fold when his two-week suspension ends.

ESPN sources understand that Southampton are eager to set up a permanent or temporary transfer for 15 million pound summer buy Osvaldo before next Friday’s transfer deadline, after his training ground fight with teammate Jose Fonte left his future in serious doubt.

While Davis does not directly name Osvaldo in comments given following his side’s FA Cup fourth round victory against Yeovil on Saturday, there is no doubting the sentiment in his words after a turbulent few weeks off the field for the south coast club.

The departure of influential executive chairman Nicola Cortese has already created some uncertainty around the club, with Osvaldo’s actions at the Staplewood training base fuelling a suspicion that one of the Premier League success stories of this season is showing signs of instability.

“We’ve said for a long time that we have always had a good team spirit and a good changing room and that can’t change,” stated Davis, who kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 win against Yeovil. “If anyone doesn’t want to be involved in that then they are not welcome.

“Obviously what has happened has happened. As a team, as a squad, as a club, we are looking forward and we are very much together.

“We showed that again today and it is something we just want to move on  from. It is something we want to move on and concentrate on what happens out there. Our dressing room is as solid as it has ever been and it will continue to be so.”

Davis went on to express his hope that Southampton could mount a challenge in this season’s FA Cup, after they made it through to the last 16.

“I really believe that we’ve got the capabilities of going all the way,” he added. “The position we find ourselves in at the moment in the Premier League means we can have a real go in the FA Cup and we have shown we are capable of beating anyone on our day.

“You want to get a home draw in the next round if possible and suddenly you find yourselves in the latter stages of the competition and anything is possible for us.”
