FIFA's World Cup bidding report delayed

Canada lining up World Cup 2026 bid

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke admits there will still be issues leading up to the World Cup in Brazil.

The Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) has talked up plans to put forward a bid to host the World Cup in 2026.

World Cup Daily: Friday

The North American nation, who are ranked 111th in the world, have only ever participated in one World Cup -- back in 1986 in Mexico.

And CSA president Victor Montagliani feels it is now time to put Canada on the footballing map by launching a bid for the 2026 edition of the competition.

''We're the only G8 nation to not host the World Cup,'' he is quoted as saying by Sports Illustrated. ''We've hosted almost every other event. I think it's time for Canada to step up to the plate.''

Canada has hosted FIFA youth tournaments in the past, and will stage next year's Women's World Cup.

A CONCACAF member, however, has not hosted the World Cup since the United States in 1994.

And with U.S. football having gone from strength to strength since then, Montagliani feels Canada would do well to follow the example set by their neighbours.

''When they bid for the World Cup, I wouldn't say the game was in a healthy state in the U.S. both professionally and domestically,'' he said. ''Their leadership group decided to put a bid together, and I think that was a bit of a lightning rod for people to come together.''

Russia are due to hold the 2018 World Cup while Qatar are set to play host to the 2022 edition, with this summer's tournament being staged in Brazil
