Guarin-Vucinic swap breaks down

Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic and Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin have been left in limbo after talks over a swap deal broke down on Tuesday.

The two players had already agreed terms -- and Vucinic had passed a medical -- but Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the transfer had ground to a halt.

Inter president Erick Thohir refused to sanction the straight swap deal negotiated by director of sport Piero Ausilio, technical director Marco Branca and general manager Marco Fassone in six hours of talks with Juve representatives on Monday.

Thohir instead asked for Vucinic plus five million euros for Guarin -- a demand the Bianconeri rejected.

An Inter statement said: "President Thohir, after consultation with Dr Massimo Moratti [the honorary Inter president], his son Angelomario and the club's management, has decided that the conditions, both technical and economical, do not exist for an agreement to be reached.

"He has already given the order to those in charge of the technical area of the club to evaluate other opportunities on the transfer market with the objective of reinforcing the squad while respecting the economic parameters imposed by Financial Fair Play."

Guarin did not train with Inter on Tuesday as he awaited confirmation of a move to Turin, while Vucinic spent the day in Milan having already said farewell to his Juventus teammates.

Juve are concentrating on their Coppa Italia quarterfinal clash at Roma on Tuesday night, with general manager Beppe Marotta in the capital rather than in Milan for any further talks.

Coach Antonio Conte left Vucinic out of his squad for that game, and was believed to have hoped to be able to field Guarin at the Stadio Olimpico.

The breakdown in talks could lead to moves by Premier League clubs -- Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have all been linked with the players.

The mooted deal had been ridiculed by celebrity Inter supporters. Comedian Rosario Fiorello branded the club's management "incompetent" for even considering it, while writer and journalist Beppe Severgnini described the situation as "a joke."
