Jay DeMerit re-signs with Whitecaps

Jay DeMerit says he's happy to continue his career in Vancouver.

Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit has signed a new contract to stay in Vancouver, the club revealed Monday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The centre back was the first player Vancouver signed in 2010 before their transition to Major League Soccer, and DeMerit said on Twitter he was happy to stay on.

He later tweeted to clarify that he had in fact re-signed, not "resigned."

"With the strong nucleus we have created over the past few years, together with the young talent we will help grow, I believe the future of this club is bright and I look forward to being a part of it," DeMerit said in a statement on the club's official website.

DeMerit, 34, is a former Watford captain who started all four games for the U.S. at the 2010 World Cup.

Last season, he ruptured his Achilles tendon in Vancouver's season opener in March and returned to action in September.

"As he has proven over the last three seasons, Jay is an important member of our club,” said Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson. "He's a total leader, and he's someone who we had every intention of bringing back. His dedication and professionalism were on full display last season when he returned from a serious injury earlier than expected and proved that he could still compete at a high level.

"The experience, energy, and standards Jay brings to our group is second to none and we’re delighted that he has committed to continuing his career with our club."
