Ba to replace injured Torres

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury against Manchester United on Sunday.

• Lythell: Chelsea make light work of Man United

And Blues boss Jose Mourinho has vowed to give back-up marksman Demba Ba game time in the Spaniards absence.

Torres damaged his lateral knee ligament after coming on as a late substitute for Chelsea’s hat trick hero Samuel Eto’o, but Mourinho was eager to play down suggestions that the absence of the Spain international will force him into signing a striker in this transfer window.

“It’s a pity because Nando [Torres] is in a good moment, but it’s time for Demba,” stated Mourinho.

“Demba had a fantastic week and it was very difficult for me to leave him out of selection because he worked very, very well. In our next matches is for Demba or Samuel. Let’s go.”

Torres’s injury is a blow for Chelsea, with the 50 million pound marksman scoring in his last two Premier League starts as the Blues long-standing concerns of a lack of goals for their front men has started to evaporate since the turn of the year.

Now it seems as if Ba will get his chance to prove his worth to Mourinho, with the Senegal striker eager to improve on a record that has seen him score one Premier League goal in eight appearances this season.
