Bayer Leverkusen is likely to be sidelined for the rest of the season after the club confirmed the 25-year-old had torn his anterior cruciate ligament.

"Robbie Kruse suffered a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in training and so is likely to be missing for Bayer 04 in the entire second half of this season.

"The Australia international picked up the injury on Friday at training and, on Saturday, an MRI scan showed the worst outcome."

Kruse will undergo surgery to fix the injury but a place in Ange Postecoglou’s squad for this year’s World Cup is now in serious doubt.

Kruse, who was named Australian player of the year in 2013, was expected to be one of Postecoglou’s main attacking threats as Australia face Spain, the Netherlands and Chile in Brazil.
