Central Coast Mariners go third

Mile Sterjovski celebrates his match-winning goal for the Mariners.

Central Coast Mariners nudged up to third place in the A-League as Mile Sterjovski's deflected strike secured a 1-0 win over Sydney FC.

It was a lucky break that saw them claim the points, and former Lille and Basle midfielder Sterjovski was the beneficiary, taking up possession after midfield dawdling by Sydney and moving into a central position with the ball on his left foot.

He aimed a powerful shot at goal from 25 yards that Vedran Janjetovic looked to have comfortably covered, however the ball nicked off the right arm of Matthew Jurman and diverted into the bottom left corner.

Sydney could not recover from that 58th-minute setback and remain seventh in the 10-team division, which is headed by Brisbane Roar, with Western Sydney Wanderers currently second.

The Mariners went ahead of Melbourne Victory, who suffered a 5-0 drubbing by Wellington Phoenix

Carlos Hernandez opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and both he and Kenny Cunningham netted in the dying throes of the first half, with Hernandez's second of the game a penalty.

Substitute Jeremy Brockie and Stein Huysegems wrapped up the scoring with goals in the closing 10 minutes.

Wellington's resounding win helped them climb above Adelaide United to go eighth.
