Sources: Stoke to loan Juan Agudelo

The ESPN FC crew discuss the chance that Juan Agudelo will be loaned from Stoke City to the Dutch Eredivisie.

Stoke City will soon loan American striker Juan Agudelo to Dutch club FC Utrecht, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

With his UK work permit status uncertain, Juan Agudelo could play immediately in the Eredivisie.

Sources told ESPN FC on Friday that Stoke -- while continuing to pursue a work permit that will enable Agudelo to finally play in the Premier League after a lengthy courtship -- are finalising a loan move for Agudelo with Utrecht that will allow him to play immediately in the Eredivisie.

Stoke's first attempt to secure a work permit for the 21-year-old was denied in November by UK government officials. But it's believed Agudelo will eventually secure the clearance he needs to join the Potters at last in the summer after completing a six-month loan spell with FC Utrecht, who currently sit ninth in the Eredivisie table.

On Tuesday, when Agudelo formally signed a multi-year deal with Stoke after a protracted transfer saga dating to last summer, Agudelo tweeted:

Agudelo scored seven goals last season for the New England Revolution after a midseason move from Chivas USA.

ESPN FC reported in August that Stoke, at the behest of manager Mark Hughes, desperately tried to complete a deal for the Colombian-born striker before the summer transfer window closed Sept. 2, only for the Revolution to reject multiple bids, the highest of which was $750,000.

The Revs wanted to keep Agudelo until the end of the 2013 MLS season, and he helped them secure the club's first playoff bid since 2009.

Stoke is also the club home for U.S. national team regulars Geoff Cameron and Brek Shea, though Shea is currently in the midst of a 28-day loan with Barnsley in the Championship.

Maurice Edu, a fourth prominent American on Stoke's books, is trying to complete a move back to MLS with the Philadelphia Union before the current transfer window closes Jan. 31.
