Hull City wrap up Shane Long signing

Hull City have completed the signing of striker Shane Long from West Bromwich Albion in a deal that could eventually be worth seven million pounds.

Shane Long came close to a move to Hull during the summer transfer window.
Steve Bruce has completed the deal to bring Long to Hull.

Tigers boss Steve Bruce had an offer for Long accepted earlier this month, and the final details of the move have now been completed.

Long, 26, has signed a three-year deal and told Hull’s official website: “I've met all of the lads today, and everybody seems really friendly.

"After meeting the manager [Steve Bruce], and respecting what he's done as a player and a manager, I was happy to start a new part of my career here. Hopefully I can score a few goals to take us further up the league."

But Pepe Mel will not be given any of the money received from Hull to strengthen his West Brom squad in the January window, with new arrivals being loan deals or free transfers.

The Baggies will bank around five million pounds up front with the rest in add-ons. Long's departure leaves Albion short of striking options, but new head coach Mel has been told by chairman Jeremy Peace that the cash will be used to offset the twelve million pounds paid for Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe in the summer.

"It [Long's sale] is something I was told would be a possibility. I’m sure that West Brom are not going to sign Lionel Messi, but there are players who can come here and do a good job," Mel said.

Sporting and technical director Richard Garlick explained: "We traditionally work on a model of topping up with short-term deals, loans and loans with options. I don't see that changing, and we have spoken to Pepe about it.

"We have a lot of players -- good players. Pepe is happy to work with those players and, if there is a need to look to the transfer market, we will do so. But they will be loans or loans with options.

"If we felt a need to go in and get a short-term deal to solve any striking issues we've got then we will try to do that. We have a good selection of strikers, they've all trained this week, they're all fit and so Pepe has some good options."
