Fulham manager confirms Morrison bid

Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen has confirmed that his club has made a bid to sign attacking midfielder Ravel Morrison from West Ham.

The Hammers have rejected Fulham's initial approach for the 20-year-old England under-21 star, but Meulensteen believes the player is keen to complete the move to Craven Cottage.

Ravel Morrison has struggled to hold down a regular place in West Ham's midfield.
Ravel Morrison has struggled to hold down a regular place in West Ham's midfield.

Meulensteen worked with Morrison during his time as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United and he is convinced he could get the best out of a player who has had something of a chequered reputation in his fledging career.

"We have put a bid in for Ravel Morrison, but that got knocked back, it got rejected, and so we need to review it and move on," said Meulensteen after his side secured a much needed 3-0 FA Cup third-round replay win against Norwich.

"Yes I think he [Morrison] does want to come. I don't know what the situation is now, because that's left with [club director] Alistair Macintosh, but he would bring youthfulness, energy, unpredictability, attacking strength, loads of things.

"I've known him for a long, long time, but the thing is this -- we have to wait and see how the club takes it forward as to whether there's another bid. He would bring youthfulness, energy, unpredictability, attacking strength, loads of things."

Meulensteen suggested that while a deal could yet be struck to sign Morrison, he is finding it tough to do business in his first transfer window as a Premier League manager.

"I've made my desires clear so I'll leave it up to the relevant people to take forward, but I don't know the ins and outs," he added. "It's very difficult in the January transfer window.

"People always say, 'Why don't you do your business early', and the answer's simple, because you can't. Clubs are in a similar situation, they know the longer they wait the higher the price will go. Or they gamble and nothing comes off."

Morrison shot to prominence as he turned in a sparkling performance in West Ham's 3-0 Premier League victory against Tottenham in October, but he has struggled to hold down a regular spot in Sam Allardyce's line-up in the months since.

His last appearance in a West Ham shirt came in their 5-0 FA Cup third round defeat at Nottingham Forest earlier this month, with the Hammers yet to comment on the bid from their London rivals.

New Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also been linked with a move to Morrison in recent days, with his knowledge of the player also fuelled by Manchester United connections.
