Holtby could consider Schalke return

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lewis Holtby could be open to a return to Schalke, with his agent telling Bild the Royal Blues would be “an interesting option.”

Crace: Bentaleb dilemma
Fitch: Tracksuit Tim

Holtby left Schalke for Spurs a year ago, but he has made only 12 appearances in the Premier League this season and finds himself down the pecking under new boss Tim Sherwood.

His agent, Marcus Noack, had said in November that the 23-year-old had no intention of leaving White Hart Lane but the Germany international -- who spoke positively about Schalke last month -- now appears to be actively seeking a transfer.

“Above all else, Lewis wants to play,” Noack said. “That’s why we are looking for solutions. Schalke is an interesting option.”

The Royal Blues are hoping to reinforce their squad following Jan Kirchhoff’s ankle injury, which will see the on-loan Bayern Munich midfielder sidelined for several weeks.

On Monday, Schalke coach Jens Keller had told kicker that the club “would really like to do something in the transfer market.”

However, the Royal Blues will need to offload U.S. international Jermaine Jones first, as the holding midfielder is one of the bigger earners on the Schalke, with his annual salary close to four million euros.

Earlier this month, when Schalke travelled to their winter training camp in Qatar, Jones had remained in Germany to consider offers from other clubs.
