Canaries keen to sign Jonas Gutierrez

Norwich City boss Chris Hughton has said he is interested in signing midfielder Jonas Gutierrez from Newcastle, but has denied that a deal between the two clubs is close to being done.

Jonas Gutierrez joined Newcastle United from Real Mallorca in 2008
Gutierrez is a target for Norwich and Chris Hughton.

Hughton, whose Canaries have struggled for goals this season and are only two points clear of the relegation zone, said there was nothing to confirm as yet about a player he managed while in charge of the Magpies.

Gutierrez, 30, posted Twitter messages bidding farewell to Newcastle supporters over the weekend, and the Argentina international could now be heading for Norfolk.

He wrote: "It was an honour and a pleasure to play with the Newcastle shirt and to have the support of the Geordies.

"Thanks for the messages. I enjoyed my five years at the club, I hope the club finish the highest this season and the best to my teammates."

Hughton, speaking at a news conference ahead of Tuesday’s FA Cup third-round replay at Fulham, said: "There is an interest in Jonas Gutierrez but there's nothing to confirm at this moment. If that changes, we will let you know."

Gutierrez was a key player for Hughton, who was in charge at St James' Park between June 2009 and December 2010, as he led the Magpies back into the top flight.

He joined Newcastle from Real Mallorca in 2008, and has made 195 appearances and scored 11 goals but figured only twice this season.
