Klopp stays quiet over Benzema link

Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp has refused to comment on speculation that he could sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in a swap deal with midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

Karim Benzema doubled Real Madrid's lead thanks to Gareth Bale's assist.
Benzema has been linked with a Dortmund move.

Klopp, who loses main striker Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich on a free transfer in the summer, said the club might end up not signing a high-profile forward at all.

Bild suggested the swap could happen because Gundogan has yet to renew his contract, which expires in 2015.

"No comment," Klopp told Bild when asked about the rumour, but went on to explain: "I'm not a fan of buying someone solely because of the scoring rate, which means to buy someone who scored 15 goals and set up another 10. Two years from now, there will be strikers nobody was talking about today."

Despite Dortmund recently announcing their intention to spend in the summer transfer market, Klopp stressed: "No one should believe that we won't continue if we can't sign a Real, Barca or Manchester United striker.

"To me, it's equally important to sign a striker who might only score 10 now, but maybe 20 in the next season."

With Lewandowski's long-mooted move having been confirmed, fears have been voiced that the rise of Dortmund to Champions League finalists last season could now be followed by a fall.

But the manager said: "We always knew that [the departure of star players] would happen. I said many years ago that our task has to be to turn BVB into a club you really want to join and that nobody likes to leave.

"We are not there yet. You sometimes have to be patient. Because we have had such quick development, it does not mean it will continue like that."

Meanwhile, Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United during the January window, told reporters at a news conference: "Some of this speculation is funny, but I am not paying attention to it."
