Aiden McGeady to join Everton

Everton have agreed a deal to sign winger Aiden McGeady from Spartak Moscow.

Aiden McGeady
McGeady moved to Spartak from Celtic in 2010.

The Republic of Ireland international was paraded on the pitch at Goodison Park before their Premier League game against Norwich on Saturday.

McGeady’s contract with Spartak runs out in June, and he has been able to negotiate with other clubs since Jan. 1.

Everton have decided to pay an undisclosed fee to complete the deal now, rather than wait until the summer to sign him on a free transfer.

The Toffees confirmed that the winger has signed a four-and-a-half year contract. He will be available to make his debut when they travel to West Brom in the Premier League on Jan. 20.

Manager Roberto Martinez has long been an admirer of McGeady, having tried to sign him when he was in charge at Wigan.

“Spartak and Everton have reached an agreement in principle on the transfer of 27-year-old midfielder Aiden McGeady to the English club,” read a statement on Spartak’s official website.

“Spartak Moscow thanks Aiden for the years he has spent with the team and wishes him success in his future career.”

McGeady, who moved to Spartak from Celtic in 2010, told Everton TV: "This is the dream move. I spoke to a lot of the Irish lads here before I signed for Everton and it is great to have them around. It feels like the first day at school again, but everyone had told me what a great club this is and a big pull for me coming here is the manager.

"I have come close to joining Everton on a few occasions and nearly signed for Roberto Martinez when he was a Wigan, so it's great to finally get it done and dusted. There was some talk last summer that it might happen, but I'm delighted to finally get a chance in the Premier League. I can't wait to get started now.

"The name of Everton is a massive pull and we all understand where this clubs wants to be. It will be hard to get into this team as I haven't played for a while and it may take a bit of time to get up to speed, but it's great to be here."
