Cabaye eases exit fears

Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye has allayed any fears of his immediate departure after declaring his only focus was the club’s climb up the Premier League.

Yohan Cabaye celebrates after putting Newcastle ahead at Old Trafford.
Yohan Cabaye said his only focus was on the showdown with Manchester City.

• Duffy: Slowing down City

The France international was the subject of a failed 10 million euro bid from Arsenal last summer and has been linked with a series of clubs, including the Gunners and Paris St Germain, in recent weeks.

But despite rumours suggesting that the 27-year-old would buy the last two remaining years of his contract to prompt a move away from St James’ Park, Cabaye revealed his full attention was only on the club’s showdown with Manchester City.

“For me to go to Paris or another club, there is nothing. I just want to be focussed on the next game, Man City,” Cabaye told BBC Radio Newcastle.

“Nothing is happening for me. When you know what you want, it is easier.”

However, Cabaye admitted it was tough to keep concentrated with so much speculation swirling during the transfer period.

“I think it's hard for every player. It depends what the player wants -- if he wants to leave or if he wants to stay,” Cabaye continued.

“There is every time speculation about the transfer, even in January, so it's hard for the player, the club and the fans, for everybody.

“It is not a good period for everybody. We just have to stay away from that speculation and stay focused on our job, and my job especially.”

Earlier, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew said he was not worried that Cabaye could invoke FIFA’s ‘Webster’ rule and buy out the remaining years of his contract, revealing the Frenchman had “prime position” in his squad.

“It doesn't worry me,” Pardew said. “The point you are raising is something that has been raised at an international level, it's not isolated to Yohan Cabaye.

“Whether that's possible, I don't know, it's not my department, if I am honest.

“The most important thing is that he has two years left on his contract in the summer and we are looking forward to him playing for Newcastle for the rest of this season, and we will take it from there in the summer.

“There will be reports about him every day because he is a class player. The situation with him is easy: he is a Newcastle player, he is very focused on us.

“As I have said all along, he gets prime position in our team, and that's a luxury you don't get at all the top teams, so for him, it's a good position and for us, it's a good position for us to have him.”
