Walter Mazzarri blames officials

Inter Milan coach Walter Mazzarri has pointed the finger at referees as the reason for his side’s current form.

Diego Milito shows his frustration during Inter's defeat to Udinese.

Wilson: Inter exposed in Coppa

The Nerazzurri slipped to sixth in Serie A on Monday after losing to Lazio while they were eliminated from the Coppa Italia by Udinese on Thursday night. Once again, Mazzarri only had one gripe about his side's game at the Stadio Friuli.

"It's becoming a joke," he said, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. "It's been like this for 17 games. There was an absolutely blatant penalty for us that wasn't given, but I'm not going to talk about this any more from now on, otherwise people will just say I'm moaning."

As far as his side's performance was concerned, Mazzarri said he had little to grumble about.

"It was all one-way in the second half," he said. "Our reaction did not come too late. We're still a work in progress and we paid for the first half in which we were a bit bewildered. Of course we wanted to go as far as possible in the Coppa, but we haven't made it, also because I had to test a few things out.

"The return of [Diego] Milito was the most positive note from tonight. It seems like a lifetime since he last played 90 minutes. We'll console ourselves with the league and with Milito."

After missing out on a potential city derby with AC Milan in the quarterfinals, and with no European football this season, Inter can now turn their full attention to Serie A, where Mazzarri is not making any guarantees either.

"We said that this was going to be a year of reconstruction and people understand and accept that," the former Napoli coach said. "This team has an identity and spirit, but you can't do everything in just one year.

"Probably I was appointed for this reason. At Napoli, I took over a team who was sixth from the bottom and you can all see where we arrived in four years. Let's hope that in a short space of time, we will return to being competitive again, but I'm not able to set any objectives."
