Cardiff sign Magnus Wolff Eikrem

Cardiff City have announced the signing of Norway midfielder Magnus Wolff Eikrem from Heerenveen for an undisclosed fee.

Magnus Wolff Eikrem has already worked under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United and Molde.
Magnus Wolff Eikrem has already worked under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United and Molde.

Eikrem, 23, had played for Manchester United during Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time on the coaching staff at Old Trafford and then played under his compatriot at Molde between 2011 and 2013.

He signed for Eredivisie side Heerenveen on a four-year deal last summer but has now been reunited with Solskjaer in South Wales.

“I’ve known Magnus for many years, having worked with him at Manchester United and then signing him for Molde,” Solskjaer told the official Cardiff website. “While I was there I had to sell him as he was our best player -- and now I feel lucky to get to sign him again for Cardiff City for a reasonable price. I see this as money well spent.

“He’s a playmaker, a quarterback if you will, someone who likes to get on the ball and can see a pass. He’s technically very good, including set pieces and has great vision. Magnus will add a lot to Cardiff City and will blend in very well with the midfielders in the squad.”

Heerenveen issued a statement on their official website expressing disappointment at losing the player.

It read: “Heerenveen regrets the departure of Manus Eikrem after six months, but the Norwegian was recently given permission to hold talks with Cardiff City after having indicated that he wanted to go for the good of his career.

“It is also very important for the club’s financial health, and that has certainly played a role in the decision to allow Eikrem to make the transfer.

“Magnus Eikrem was a model professional both on and off the field at Heerenveen. The club wishes him every success in his future career at Cardiff City.”
