Schalke confirm Sidney Sam deal

Schalke have announced that Germany international Sidney Sam will join the club from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

Sidney Sam will join Schalke at the end of the season.

Sam, 25, has enjoyed a highly impressive season so far, contributing seven goals and five assists in 13 Bundesliga appearances.

Leverkusen had tried to extend Sam’s contract, which contains a two-and-a-half million euro release clause and was due to expire in 2015, but reports last month indicated that he was set to move to the Veltins-Arena.

Schalke have now confirmed on their official website that the player has agreed a four-year contract and will join in the summer.

“Sidney Sam had proven that he can be a dynamic addition to an attack even before his strong performances this season,” Schalke’s sporting director Horst Heldt said. “He is versatile, ambitious and wants to achieve a lot with Schalke. We are delighted that he has opted for the Royal Blues.”

The attacking midfielder debuted for Germany during the summer tour of the USA last season, winning his first cap in Germany’s 4-2 victory against Ecuador in Florida. He has since made four more appearances for the senior national team and is a candidate for the World Cup squad.
