Ryan Giggs bemoans referee decisions

Ryan Giggs has joined David Moyes in complaining about the refereeing decisions for both goals in Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in the first leg of the Capital One Cup semifinal.

Former teammates from happier days at Old Trafford, Giggs and Brown share a post-match word.
Ryan Giggs scored a rare own goal as Man Utd lost at Sunderland.

• Brewin: Fergie spectre looms
• Moyes: No Coentrao deal
• Heneage: United's bleak winter
• Moyes slams ref for penalty
• Premier Fantasy: Play the game

The 40-year-old player-coach was debited with a rare own goal when Sunderland opened the scoring but United were annoyed that a free kick was given against Jonny Evans, who challenged Steven Fletcher, before Sebastian Larsson’s set-piece led to the chance.

Fabio Borini went on to score a winner from the penalty spot when referee Andre Marriner, advised by his assistant Peter Bankes, ruled that Tom Cleverley had fouled Adam Johnson.

And Giggs told MUTV: “I thought both decisions were harsh. I thought the first one was a free kick to us but saying that, we still have got to defend the free kick.

“We got punished for that, but we were getting back into the game with a great header from Nemanja [Vidic] and it looked like there was only going to be one winner. We created enough chances, but unfortunately the decisions went against us.”

United boss Moyes was angry after the game, saying: “I thought the referee was going to blow in our direction for the first goal. I couldn’t believe he gave a free kick. It was a terrible decision.”

Moyes compared the incident that led to Borini’s decider to the moment in the 2-1 loss to Tottenham when Adnan Januzaj was cautioned for simulation.

He added: “We had had a player booked against Tottenham for the same. The referee is looking at it -- he’s in a great position to look at it, right down the line, probably 15 yards, not too close but the linesman gives it from behind. He can’t see through Patrice Evra.”
