Ivan Rakitic not seeking Sevilla exit

Reported Liverpool and Manchester United target Ivan Rakitic says he is happy at Sevilla for the moment, and would be “honoured” to consider extending his contract.

Ivan Rakitic has 18 months remaining on his current contract.
Ivan Rakitic has 18 months remaining on his current contract.

Rakitic, 25, scored his eighth goal in 16 La Liga games this season in Sunday’s 3-0 home win over Getafe, while he also leads the club’s assists rankings with an impressive six.

Such displays have attracted suitors who also reportedly include French champions Paris Saint Germain, and while Sevilla’s new president Jose Castro said just before Christmas that the Croatia international would not leave unless his 40 million euro release clause was paid, there has been some suggestion that it may have been the cash-strapped club’s attempt at setting the terms for a negotiation during this month’s transfer window.

However, the former Schalke playmaker, who was made Sevilla captain last summer, told German sports website spox.com that he was currently very content at the Andalucian club.

“I feel happy in Sevilla and in Spain, with my wife and daughter,” Rakitic said. “When you are happy, football is also easier. There is no tension around renewing my contract because there is still a year and a half left, but that the club do this [make him a new offer] is a great honour for me.”

Asked directly whether he would consider a move to a big English team like Arsenal or Manchester United, Rakitic suggested that was more likely to happen further into his future.

“I do not think that far ahead,” he said. “I prefer to have short-term goals. People know that I am very happy here. At the moment, I am not thinking about other clubs or other countries.”
