Montella remains positive over Rossi

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella expects Giuseppe Rossi to come back "stronger than ever" from his latest injury setback.

Mutu happy to replace Rossi

The Italy international faces up to three months out with a sprained knee, although he has at least avoided a repeat of the cruciate ligament tear he sustained in 2011.

Having come back from that injury, which led to 18 months on the sidelines, Montella is convinced Rossi will come back fighting again this time.

"I've seen how combative he is and he will be back stronger than ever," the Viola coach told a news conference. "We're very sorry for Giuseppe, but we've got to see the glass half-full -- we all thought it could have been something a lot worse so we're relieved it isn't."

With Rossi out, the attention has turned to Mario Gomez, who has not featured since damaging knee ligaments in mid-September.

"He started running again yesterday and that’s a good sign," Montella said. "He has always tried to speed up his recovery and it's almost as if he feels responsible for the situation. He's played very little, but he is nevertheless very dedicated to this club."

The 28-year-old's return to action is imminent, although with Rossi out, Montella admits he is hoping to be given another striker to work with during the current transfer window.

"We need a second striker who can play with Mario," the coach said. "Somebody who can play both as a striker and as a winger."

That could be another Gomez -- Alejandro -- who played under Montella at Catania and is now plying his trade in Ukraine with Metalist Khakiv, as Montella added: "He's a very, very interesting player. Let's see what we can do."
