Arsenal ran out 2-0 winners to advance to the fourth round but the match was overshadowed by supporters throwing missiles at Gunners’ winger Theo Walcott and St John Ambulance workers.

Earlier, Walcott had gestured the scoreline to the Spurs fans as he was being stretchered off after picking up an injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Following the match, police assessed the Twitter messages, which referred to the Holocaust, an inquiry had been launched as part of Operation Arrowtip, which deals with football-related crime.

“Following the Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur match on Saturday January 4 the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) became aware of anti-Semitic messages posted on Twitter,” a police spokesman said.

“Having assessed messages published on Twitter, officers from Operation Arrowtip are now investigating.”

Police will also investigate the incidents of missiles being thrown with the help of both clubs.

“The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is aware of incidents during the Arsenal Vs Tottenham Hotspur match on Saturday, January 4 where a number of objects were thrown from both home and away sections of the crowd.,” the police force said.

“The MPS takes all such incidents very seriously. Officers from Operation Arrowtip are investigating and are liaising with both clubs and the Football Association (FA) over these incidents.”

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
