Bayern have high hopes for Green

Bayern Munich “have faith” that Julian Green will challenge for a first-team place, according to the club’s sporting director Matthias Sammer.

• McIntyre: Green's star on the rise
• Honigstein: Let's make a deal
• Ribery the players' star so far
• Uersfeld: The end of Dortmund
• Schaaf: Bayern land Lewi, finally

Florida-born Green, 18, is currently in Bayern’s squad for their trip to Qatar ahead of the second half of the Bundesliga season.

Green is top scorer for Bayern’s reserve team this season with 15 goals in 18 appearances and was rewarded with his competitive debut in November, when he was brought on as a late substitute in the Champions League victory at CSKA Moscow.

He was also called into the Club World Cup squad in December, though was an unused substitute in Morocco as Bayern lifted their fifth trophy of the year.

Julian Green Bayern Munich training
Florida-born Julian Green is now training with Bayern Munich's first-team squad.

Alongside fellow Bayern reserve players Alessandro Schoepf and Ylli Sallahi, Green has now been handed the chance to move even closer to the first team and Sammer is convinced he and his teammates possess the quality needed to play for the Bavarians.

“First of all it’s a signal from the coach and the club that we continue to believe in two pillars, established pros on the one hand and talented youngsters on the other,” Sammer told the club’s official website.

“These three have put themselves forward and they’re coming along very well. We have faith in all three, but now it’s up to them. They have to go for it.”

Green is eligible to play for both Germany and the United States and while he has decided to represent Germany’s under-19 side for the time being, USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann has not given up hope that the forward will one day turn out for the Stars and Stripes.

“We are in talks with him. Right now, he has opted to play for the Germany under-19 team,” Klinsmann told Sport Bild in December. “We don’t put any pressure on him and remain in talks in order to convince him to play for the U.S. someday.”
