Marseille hopeful on Pereira deal

Marseille coach and sporting director Jose Anigo has told Italian media the Ligue 1 club are "confident" of bringing Inter Milan defender Alvaro Pereira to France.

Alvaro Pereira has impressed for Inter
Alvaro Pereira has been linked with a move to France.

Pereira, 28, has made just two Serie A starts for Inter this season, and with the World Cup looming on the horizon, the Uruguay international requires more playing time.

With current OM left-backs Jeremy Morel inconsistent and Benjamin Mendy still inexperienced, Pereira would likely get more opportunity to show his talents at the Stade Velodrome.

"We're confident. There's a good chance," Anigo, who will act as first-team coach until the season's end following Elie Baup's sacking in December, told TMW. "We're interested in the player for this winter. We want him on a six-month loan. We hope we can get him, he's an important player and always good with Uruguay. The next few days will be key. I hope everything will turn out for the best."

Without the financial resources of either Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco, Marseille -- after a relatively large summer outlay -- plan to keep a tight hold on their expenditure this month.

President Vincent Labrune told RMC the recently introduced 75 percent tax on salaries in excess of one million euros means the former European champions cannot afford to add to a squad which lies sixth, 11 points off third place, at the halfway stage in the season.

"We've not planned to buy a player. We have reduced liquidities," said Labrune, who admitted OM had rejected a 12 million euro bid from Napoli for defender Nicolas Nkoulou in mid-December. "We managed to get back on an even keel last June, and invested all of our Champions League revenue in the summer. We're now confronted with a major problem, the 75 percent tax, which means we'll have to pay eight million euros in April 2014.

"We can't go mad. If there is a departure or two, we'll replace them. Otherwise, we'll stay like this. Nicolas wants to stay at OM, and is an important player in our plans. There's very little chance that he'll leave."
