Luuk de Jong linked with Newcastle

German tabloid Bild has reported that Borussia Moenchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong could be on his way to Newcastle United.

Luuk de Jong could be on his way to Tyneside.

De Jong, 23, joined Moenchengladbach from Twente Enschede for 12 million euros in 2012 but failed to impress, scoring only six goals in his debut season.

So far during this campaign, he has been used 13 times as a substitute -- and Bild reports that the Magpies are now set to approach Moenchengladbach about a potential transfer.

"I can only say that a few clubs have enquired about me," De Jong told the paper. "I am fully concentrating on the season -- but, of course, a lot can happen until Jan. 31."

Meanwhile, Newcastle sources have told ESPN FC that the club could bid for both West Bromwich Albion striker Shane Long and Spartak Moscow winger Aiden McGeady.

It is thought Newcastle have made initial enquiries about signing Scottish-born McGeady, who is keen to leave. He has also been linked with Everton, whose manager Roberto Martinez tried unsuccessfully to sign him while in charge of Wigan.

"McGeady was offered a contract extension by us, but he has refused it," Spartak sporting director Roman Askhabadze was quoted as saying last month.

"He did it for family reasons, because his wife and children have not adapted to Moscow. In the next transfer window, if we get an offer for McGeady he will go."

Long has been linked with a move to Stoke City, where manager Mark Hughes is eager to reinforce his striking options.
