Ter Stegen to leave Moenchengladbach

Borussia Moenchengladbach have announced that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to leave the Bundesliga club, opening the door for a reported move to Barcelona.

Ter Stegen, 21, has long been linked with a switch to Barca, with the Catalans' current No. 1 Victor Valdes set to depart the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Moenchengladbach were keen to keep hold of the Germany international and offered him a new deal.

However, according to the club, Ter Stegen turned down their offer, meaning Moenchengladbach will look to cash in on the player in the summer rather than risk losing him for nothing when his current contract runs out in 2015.

“Ter Stegen will leave Borussia,” Moenchengladbach said on their offical Twitter account.

“Marc has told us that he will reject our offer,” the tweet quoted sporting director Max Eberl as saying.

“It seems like we’ll have to look for a new keeper for next season,” Eberl added on the club's offical Facebook page.

Ter Stegen himself confirmed the news that he turned down a fresh contract offer from Moenchengladbach.

“I have taken a long time to make up my mind and informed Max Eberl today that I don’t want to renew my contract,” he told kicker.

“Everyone knows that I am Borussia through and through. It has not been an easy decision for me. I can’t and I don’t want to say more about the state of things right now. I will make my decision.”

Eberl feels Ter Stegen will end up at Barcelona, although he stated that the Spanish champions have yet to table an offer for the goalkeeper.

“We believe it will be the club [Barcelona] everyone speculates about,” Eberl told kicker. “I would be surprised if it went any differently.”

At the weekend, the father of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois quashed rumours that his son will be joining Barca, dropping a hint that the Catalan club had opted for Ter Stegen instead.

Eberl, who explained the club have no plans to force the goalkeeper to see out his contract, is hopeful that Moenchengladbach can hold out for a transfer fee of over 10 million euros for Ter Stegen.

“It’s also a chance for us. You can earn an extraordinary amount of money, and we will try and cope with that,” Eberl said.

“I don’t think Gladbach -- like many other clubs -- are capable of letting two-digit million sums go away like that.”

Ter Stegen made his debut for Moenchengladbach in April 2011, at a time when the club were struggling to maintain their Bundesliga status.

The goalkeeper has not missed a single league game since then, and has currently clocked up 91 Bundesliga appearances for the club.

Ter Stegen has also won three caps for Germany, and is a regular starter for the Germany under-21 side.
