Guardiola staying quiet on Lewa deal

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says he will not comment on the signing of Robert Lewandowski until the striker joins his side in the summer.

• Uersfeld: The end of Dortmund
• Schaaf: Bayern land Lewi, finally

Lewandowski, 25, has signed a five-year deal with the European champions and will join them in July after his contract with Dortmund has expired.

Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp has stated that the announcement of the move could not have come at a better time, but Guardiola refused to talk about the deal during a news conference at Bayern’s winter training camp in Qatar.

“I understand that the media want to hear my opinion on Lewandowski. But it would not be correct towards my team, the players, Borussia Dortmund and Juergen Klopp,” Guardiola said. “I will talk about him next season."

Guardiola did say, however, that Lewandowski’s arrival does not mean Bayern striker Mario Mandzukic will have to leave the club.

“He is a strong player. He has been our top scorer [last season] and is our top scorer again this season,” he said. “Until now he was very important during my time here. He has helped us to win games. He is under contract and he will stay.”

The Croatia international is under contract at the Allianz Arena until 2016, and Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on Saturday that he is considering offering him a new deal.

Mandzukic, 27, who joined Bayern from Wolfsburg in 2012, has been linked with a move away from the club following the announcement of Lewandowski’s summer arrival.

Earlier on Monday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told the Daily Mail that the Gunners might consider a move for the player in the summer.

“Lewandowski is at Dortmund until the end of the season and they will not sell Mandzukic now -- maybe at the end of the season [we will make an offer],” Wenger said.

Several Bayern players, meanwhile, have welcomed the Lewandowski transfer.

“I think Lewandowski is a super player. He is really good, he’s one of the world’s best strikers,” Arjen Robben told Sport1.

“I was not surprised. You could see that coming,” Thomas Mueller told Bild.

Philipp Lahm added in Bild: “He is a top player. That’s a good transfer. You can get one better every year, that’s what we want to achieve.”
