Klopp happy with timing of Lewa deal

Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp believes the announcement of Robert Lewandowski’s summer move to Bayern Munich could not have come at a better time.

Uersfeld: End of an era

Lewandowski, 25, has signed a five-year deal with the European champions and will join them in July after his contract with Dortmund has expired.

News of the transfer came as no surprise to Westfalenstadion officials, who had been aware of the Poland international’s desire to join domestic rivals Bayern for some time.

And speaking to the press after Dortmund’s first training session of 2014, Klopp said: “The decision is totally fine with us. We have been in the loop for a long time.”

The Dortmund boss added he is not under the impression that Lewandowski’s “head is elsewhere.”

“Actually it is the perfect time. Everything else would have just fuelled more speculation,” Klopp said.

“There is no second Lewandowski, that’s why he was so sought-after. But we are not dependent on a single player, the club is bigger.”

With reports emerging of a last-minute effort by Real Madrid to lure Lewandowski to Spain, Klopp said it would not have made a “dramatic difference” for Dortmund where the striker ended up.

“Having said this, Bayern are that good even a Lewandowski won’t make them that much better. Just imagine if he would have signed for [Bayer] Leverkusen,” Klopp added.

Dortmund are now working on finding a replacement for Lewandowski, who has found the back of the net 65 times in the Bundesliga alone since joining the club from Lech Poznan in 2010.

“Our sporting director Michael Zorc is working under high pressure to find an alternative,” Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.

The German media have touted several candidates, including Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke and Standard Liege’s Michy Batshuayi. However, Dortmund are not giving away any information regarding the name of Lewandowski’s possible replacement.
