Alexander Buttner wants United stay

Alexander Buttner has shrugged off talk about David Moyes bringing in a new left-back and vowed to stay at Manchester United and challenge for a spot in the team.

The Dutchman, who has been linked with Tottenham and Galatasaray and was wanted by Besiktas last summer, has been Patrice Evra’s understudy during his 18 months at Old Trafford.

But manager Moyes made attempts to sign Everton’s Leighton Baines, 29, and Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao in the summer and is reportedly interested in signing either Baines or Southampton’s Luke Shaw in the January transfer window.

However, while Buttner is aware of interest in him from other clubs, he is determined to remain at Old Trafford.

The former Vitesse Arnhem player said: “I don’t want to leave. I want to fight for my place. I’m still young and I know what I can do. I just have to wait for my chances and take them.

“If people talk about other players in my position, I don’t care. I just want to play my game and show that I can handle the level. I know there are some clubs that want me but I’m happy here and want to play for Manchester United so I focus 100 percent on here.”

Buttner made just his fifth start of the season against Swansea on Sunday and although United exited the FA Cup, he acquitted himself well by delivering the cross for Javier Hernandez’s equaliser.

He added: “I’m very disappointed but I think I did well. The players know that if I get the ball I to try to cross it which is why Chicharito got the goal.”

Buttner ended the match with an arm injury but he hopes it will not keep him out of Tuesday’s game against Sunderland.

He added: “My arm is sore and I will have to see how it is. It was painful but I don’t play football with my arms. I have to train.”
