David Moyes: January signings unlikely

Manchester United manager David Moyes is bracing himself for a transfer window of frustration after conceding he is already looking to make signings next summer.

• Payne: January transfer window ins and outs
On The Move: Chelsea chase Balotelli

Moyes, whose only major signing so far has been Marouane Fellaini, is keen to add to a squad who currently languish ninth in the Premier League.

But the United boss, who arrived at Old Trafford from Everton last summer, admits he may not bring anyone in during January.

He told the Daily Express: “I think it’s relatively the same [United's transfer business]. I think most of the business will be more towards the summertime, rather than January.”

Moyes and his coaching staff are believed to have scouted a number of midfielders, including Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, Atletico Madrid’s Koke, Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Roma pair Kevin Strootman and Miralem Pjanic.

But the Scot’s bid to bring in a left-back looks likely to fail, with Everton adamant that Leighton Baines will not leave and Southampton similarly insistent they will keep hold of Luke Shaw.

Moyes said: “We’ll keep looking but if one of the targets comes around or one of the targets we’re looking at changes in January, then great.”

The former Everton boss had better news regarding the fitness of Phil Jones, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury but could be edging closer to a comeback.

He added: “He’s getting better, he’s coming on. He’s played an important role for us and it’s important we get him back because he can do different jobs for us. I don’t think he’s too far away.”

Wayne Rooney is set to miss Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Swansea with a groin problem, but Moyes is hopeful the forward will return in time to face Sunderland in the last four of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

He said: “Hopefully, he’ll be available for Tuesday night. He’s struggling now. He’s played with it for three or four weeks and we’ve left him out for a game or two to try to recover it, but he’s now just beginning to feel it a bit more so we have to be careful we don’t turn it into something worse.”
