Rooney ruled out of FA Cup

Manchester United manager David Moyes has ruled out striker Wayne Rooney for Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Swansea.

Wayne Rooney will not play against Swansea in the FA Cup.

• Payne: Ins and outs

Rooney has been struggling with a groin problem in recent times and was pictured leaving a private hospital on Friday after having further scans to reveal the extent of the injury.

And with the FA Cup clash quickly followed by the Capital One Cup match against Sunderland, Moyes confirmed his team will be without the England international for the visit of Swansea.

“He's got a groin injury and won't be available on Sunday,” Moyes told reporters.

“He's got a chance [of facing Sunderland].”

Rooney is the latest name to be added to the Old Trafford injury list alongside Ashley Young, Robin van Persie, Phil Jones, Marouane Fellaini and Nani.

However, Moyes said the club’s casualty ward would not force him into a rush of January transfers.

“It won't change how we go about things,” said Moyes.

“January is not an easy month to purchase in.

“We have a good, big squad that is getting stretched at the moment because of the number of games.

“But everybody picks up injuries at this time of year. We are no different and we will use the players.”

However, if Moyes was to try to lure a number of new players to Old Trafford, he would not be off put buying a target that was ineligible in the Champions League.

“It's not the biggest thing because obviously you've got other games to play -- FA Cup ties, League Cup ties hopefully, Premier League games,” said Moyes.

“But I do think you'd like them to be ready to play in the Champions League as well.”
