Simeone delighted with Sosa reunion

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone says he is delighted to be reunited with new Colchoneros midfielder Jose Sosa.

Jose Sosa signed for Metalist Kharkiv from Napoli in 2011.
Jose Sosa has joined Atletico on a six-month loan deal.

The pair were first together at Argentine club Estudiantes, where they together won the Campeonato Apertura in 2006, with Sosa scoring as the La Plata club clinched the trophy in a dramatic playoff against Boca Juniors.

Speaking the day after Sosa passed a medical to complete a six-month loan deal from Metalist Kharkiv, which could become a 10 million euro permanent transfer in the summer, Simeone told AS that he had been tracking the versatile playmaker for a long time.

“I always wanted to have Sosa again, since Estudiantes,” Simeone said. “He has a lot of dynamism and arrives in the box. He can also play as a second striker. We want him to be at his best as soon as possible. He is an alternative for a position where we needed someone.”

Sosa’s arrival is expected to see six million euro summer signing Leo Baptistao go out on loan after a frustrating first half of the season, with the youngster’s former club Rayo Vallecano claiming to have first option on a loan transfer, and other reports suggesting bottom side Real Betis were willing to offer Atletico more cash up front to take the Spain under-21 forward for the remainder of the campaign.

Simeone suggested Baptistao could move this month, but declined to give any details.

“We have spoken with him,” he said. “Until a player leaves I prefer not to give an opinion. We were clear with him, because there is a chance he might go out. But until that happens he is our player.”

Asked about a possible move by Atletico to sign 18-year-old San Lorenzo attacker Angel Correa this January, Simeone claimed the much-hyped starlet was not in his current thoughts.

“I am not right on top of the movements,” he said. “I know he is an important player, but today we are just thinking about the boys that are here at the moment.”
