Atletico bring in Sosa on loan

Argentina international midfielder Jose Sosa has joined Atletico Madrid on a six-month loan deal from Metalist Kharkiv.

Jose Sosa signed for Metalist Kharkiv from Napoli in 2011.
Jose Sosa signed for Metalist Kharkiv from Napoli in 2011.

News of the deal, which reportedly includes an option for the Liga leaders to make the switch permanent for 10 million euros in the summer, was broken by the 28-year-old’s agent on Tuesday.

A Colchoneros club statement released on New Year’s Day said terms had been agreed with just the medical left to complete.

“Atletico Madrid and FC Metalist have reached an agreement that will see Jose Sosa play in our club on loan until June 30, 2014,” the statement said.

“The Argentine, who acted as captain of the Ukrainian team [Metalist], arrives in Madrid in time to spend the New Year here and will do the relevant medical examination before completing his signing. Jose Sosa is an offensive midfielder with an excellent shot, who can adapt to various positions in midfield.”

AS reported on Thursday that Sosa had come through the medical with no problems. The move had long been suggested in Spain, with Atletico coach Diego Simeone thought to be keen to work again with a player he knows from their time together with Estudiantes de la Plata in Argentine club football.

Sosa, who can play as a No. 10 or in a right-sided attacking midfield role, has recently been recalled to the Argentina national set-up by coach Alejandro Sabella.

He moved to Ukraine in 2011 after a short, unsuccessful spell at Napoli, and had spent two-and-a-half years at Bayern Munich earlier in his career. ‘El Principito’ may not be available to play for Atletico in this season’s Champions League, having played in the qualifying rounds for Metalist.

Sosa’s arrival at the Calderon means summer signing Leo Baptistao, who has been hampered by injury so far this term, will go out on loan.

While the Spain under-21 international's former club Rayo Vallecano, Malaga, Almeria, Villarreal and Premier League strugglers West Ham were all reportedly interested in taking him on loan for the remainder of the campaign, it now looks as though Real Betis are best placed, having offered Atletico a loan-fee package worth two million euros.
