Jermaine Jones seeks Schalke exit

US international Jermaine Jones is seeking an early Schalke exit and will not travel to the club's winter training camp in Doha, Qatar, according to a statement Thursday.

Jermaine Jones is seeking an early Schalke exit.

"The midfielder, who is under contract at Schalke 04 until the summer of 2014, has asked sporting director Horst Heldt to allow him a change for the second half of the season," the statement read. "To consider other options the 32-year old will not travel to Qatar."

Jones has endured a difficult time in Schalke’s holding midfield, at times showing man-of-the-match performances, and at other times facing heavy criticism for his attitude on the pitch.

Following Schalke’s signing of Bayern Munich fringe player Jan Kirchhoff, the 32-year-old, who is hopeful of a spot on the United States' 2014 World Cup team, adjusted his plans.

Jones joined FC Schalke 04 from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2007, and has made a total of 129 appearances for the Royal Blues. He has scored 7 goals and set up another 13.

In the ongoing season, Jones has played a total of 22 games in all competitions for the Royal Blues, who will take on Real Madrid in the knockout stages of Champions League.
