BVB dismiss Gundogan to Madrid link

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has dismissed the latest report linking Real Madrid with a move for Ilkay Gundogan.

Ilkay Gundogan has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Rigg: Real should keep Alonso

Gundogan has regularly been linked with a move to the Bernabeu in recent months, and AS had claimed on Saturday that Madrid had taken the first steps towards signing Germany midfielder.

The Madrid-based newspaper quoted the player’s father, Irfan, as saying: “Madrid’s interest in my son is intense and they want to bid for him, but for now we can’t do anything until Ilkay fully recovers from his back injury. When he’s back playing regularly, we can talk.”

However, Irfan Gundogan has suggested he was misrepresented, telling Sueddeutsche: “Borussia Dortmund will be the first point of contact for us. There are no discussions with other clubs.”

Watzke, too, has suggested that there is little cause for concern at Dortmund, despite the 23-year-old’s current deal having entered its final 18 months.

“If we believed everything that has been said in the Spanish media about who was leaving us, we would have to worry about whether we could even put a team together,” he told Bild. “We have heard nothing from Ilkay, nor his father, to indicate that he wants to leave us.”

AS had touted Gundogan as a potential replacement for Xabi Alonso, whose contract at Madrid is due to expire at the end of the season, but Marca has claimed the Spain international is now keen open talks over an extension.
