Ghana rocked by scandal

Gyan to captain Ghana at World Cup

Al Ain striker Asamoah Gyan will be the Ghana captain for next summer’s World Cup, according to head coach Kwesi Appiah.

Steve Bruce is determined to hold onto Asamoah Gyan
Asamoah Gyan will keep a hold of the armband.

Gyan, 28, has been linked with a move back to the Premier League with West Ham in January after spending two years at Sunderland and could seal a loan move next month. The striker has bagged 39 goals in 76 appearances for Ghana and guided the side to third-place in the last African Nations Cup.

After an incredible 2010 World Cup campaign which saw the Black Stars miss out on a semifinal place following a penalty shootout defeat to Uruguay, Ghana face a daunting Group G that comprises Germany, the United States and Portugal next year and Appiah believes that Gyan is the man to lead them forward.

“Gyan is someone I think I can rely on, and I needed to give him more responsibilities,” Appiah told the Ghanaian media at the weekend. “When we were going for the [Nations Cup] we had some players unavailable and Gyan was the most senior and most respected guy at the time. That is why I gave him the captaincy.

“He played his role so well at the Nations Cup, and my confidence in him rose after the competition. That is why he remains captain to this day.”

Gyan has been the top scorer in the UAE top flight for the past two seasons and currently heads the league with 15 goals in 12 games so far.
